Rec Park needs another serious try

on April 2nd, 2009 by Joe Allan

Well this is one of my favourite topics but unfortunatly most discussions regarding the Outdoor Rec Park usually center on “what might have been”.  Many people worked hard and put in countless hours working towards the goal of a common area for all outdoor recreation activities. Everyone in the valley is aware of what happened, to put it bluntly the rug was pulled out from under the whole project by the sale of the land to Cowichan Tribes by Timberwest.

But that was yesterday and the real need for an Outdoor Rec Park has not diminished at all, the potential users of an outdoor facility like that are still out there. I must admit the recent  ”spot on”  editorial in the News/Leader got me really thinking about what “can be done”.

Remember the Rec Park Public meeting where about 500 people showed up in support of the project? 500 people showing up in favour of something, that’s real support. Usually people only get torqued up enough to attend a meeting if their opposed to something, not if their in favour of something.  Local residents would like an Outdoor Rec Park in the valley for their own use but  a Rec Park does a lot more than provide a place for locals to enjoy their outdoor pastimes, it is also a proven economic engine for everyone in the valley. Certain outdoor events would draw from  a catchment area  bigger than the island and the benefits of a well run Rec Park help us all.

So where do we go from here, should local government be approached for help? Should government be involved at all? Should residents pursue the project again? I don’t have a clear answer but I do know the need for a Rec Park is still there and  it is time to “Do It” again.

I would love to see the rec park given another shot. It is definitely time to “Do It” again, and this time I hope the “silent majority” of which I regret to admit I was a member last time, will not remain silently waiting for “our” rec park to materialize. I hope we will all be vocal and supportive, and speak up in favour of the park when confronted with nay sayers. In fact, if my back yard was big enough, I’d say “Put’er there!” As far as government involvement goes, I think it is desireable as well as unavoidable. Any proposal will no doubt require a lot of gov’t approval and permits, studies, etc., so I would hope that they would “come on board”, when they hear how much public support there really is for such a facility. Which brings us back to being vocally supportive. I think I might write to some local politicians and voice my support for the rebirth of the rec park idea.
    THE PARK SHALL RISE AGAIN!
